Brian Eno

b 15 May 1948

Brian Eno fell to earth at about the same time as David Bowie. It was again TOTP and Roxy Music's Virginia Plain with Eno in the most amazingly flamboyant outfits, squeezing these incredible noises out of a box of jumbled electronics. It was love at first sight.

I lapped up the early Roxy albums, then on a solitary teenage trip to London I discovered Fripp and Eno's collaboration "No Pussyfooting" in a secondhand shop off Piccadilly Circus. I was utterly entranced and addicted. This was the mid-70s and here was music from the future. Instrumental, synthesized textures, repetitive loops, no drums... IDM in fact. You listen to something like Swastika Girls or The Heavenly Music Corporation now and they feel totally contemporary.

Then came the solo projects - Another Green World, Before and After Science with its evocative watercolours, then Music for Films and Airports and so on... I even got over his rather dodgy vocals.

Since then he's become a part of the infrastructure of the music business; producing, influencing and working with practically everybody, including of course his extended liaisons with Bowie.

And on top of all that he seems like a really nice bloke.
