Barry Railway

This line was built due to congestion at the existing coal docks at Cardiff and Bute. The first part of the line was operating by 1880 and a new dock complex at Barry was opened in 1889 owned by the same company that built the railway. To the West the nominally independent Vale of Glamorgan Railway was owned and operated by the Barry Railway and opened in 1897. For a railway intended to move coal this line supported a surprising number of passenger services with running powers over the GWR to gain access to Cardiff.

Goods stock was painted red oxide with white lettering B R usually 24 inches high, the numbers were found in the lower left, with load and tare details in italic script in the lower right. Passenger stock was painted all over dark red.

This book details the livery practice of the GWR and also briefly covers the principal liveries of absorbed companies. There are not as many photographs as one might wish but there are plenty which suggest modelling ideas.
